Acerola Cherry

barbados cherry, malpighia emarginata, family malpighiaceae

Acerola Cherry is a plant native to the tropical regions in the Western Hemisphere. Also known as the West Indies Cherry, Barbados Cherry or just Acerola, it looks like a cherry, however, it’s actually a berry.

Sweet and pleasant tasting, they’ve been used in both traditional and modern medicine to treat illnesses like coughs and colds thanks to their high levels of Vitamin C. It’s also packed full of other beneficial nutrients like calcium, iron, thiamine (Vitamin B1), riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and niacin (Vitamin B3).

Health Benefits of Acerola Cherry

Boosting Immune System

As it’s high in Vitamin C, Acerola Cherry is great for helping to boost our immune system to fight off colds and flu as well as other infections and viruses. It’s also a great source of antioxidants so it can help the body to prevent free radical damage.

Improving Skin

Acerola Cherries are also a great source of Vitamin A, which is great for improving skin tone. Vitamin C is helpful here too as it helps to naturally build collagen, a vital building block for our skin that declines naturally as we age.

Benefits of Natural Vitamins

The ingredients used in our products, including Acerola Cherry, all are from natural sources, as opposed to synthetic vitamins.

Natural vitamins are more biologically active and longer lasting in the body, thanks to their ability to be reactivated by secondary substances in a process called redox recycling. This means that the naturally obtained Vitamin C in Acerola Cherry for example can be regenerated in the body from other citrus fruits when ingested. Synthetic vitamins on the other hand are often not absorbed as well in the body and used up and eliminated from our systems quicker.
